Details for: From Leckermoos over the Schwarzalm to Hochkar

Brief description

This route offers the full splendor of the Ybbstal Alps. Alpine pastures with rustic huts and peaks with views of Dürrenstein and deep into Styria.

Description

The Leckermoos high moor is a unique landscape with rare animal and plant species and is therefore the first highlight of this hike.
The rest of the hike alternates between paths and trails through forests and across open alpine pastures. There are always breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, from the Gesäuse to the Haller Mäuer and deep into the Alpine foothills.
Lush, flower-filled meadows alternate with karst passages, huge sinkholes and karren fields.
The Schwarzalm and the Hochkaralm are the two managed huts along the way, but the romantic Brunnecker Hut, the Schrotleitner Hut, the Wiesenalm and the (highest) Heuwies are also worth a short break. Although the Wiesenalm is the most remote alpine pasture on the Hochkar, it is also the most beautiful. The view from the Betmauer to the Leckermoos high moor is just as impressive.

Route description From Leckermoos over the Schwarzalm to Hochkar

Leckermoos - Wiesenalmhütte - Schwarzalmhütte - Brunneckerhütte - Hochkar

The hike starts at the Hochmoor Leckermoos parking lot on a forest road. From here, we follow a trail with many small hairpin bends uphill through a sparse high forest to a gate. Then over a small mountain saddle through a sparse forest uphill until the path turns left. We walk over a wide meadow ridge and then follow the moderately steep mountain ridge downhill. Then the path goes uphill again through a spruce forest to the Freyndllucke and from there right to the Betmauer. Continue here to a tree-covered hilltop and from there about 300 meters southeast to the Wiesenalmhütte. From there we walk across a meadow until a path begins on a hilltop, following it uphill through the karst landscape of the "Kessel" to a fork where we choose the meadow ridge downhill towards Schwarzalmhütte.

From the Schwarzalmhütte, we follow a path that goes fairly straight downhill to a clearing that we cross to reach a forest road, which we follow to then go through a forest hollow onto a meadow and further through a short forest section to reach the Brunneckerhütte. From the hut, we head towards a rocky summit with large boulders and a mighty larch over a stony trail, which leads uphill in numerous hairpin bends to the Heuwies. From here, a slightly downhill path leads to a fork on a saddle. Here we follow a trail with switchbacks downhill to the Schrotleitner Hütte, passing karst formations over a meadow towards Blachlboden. From the extensive meadow area of Blachlboden, a short detour to the mountain lake (+3 min) is worthwhile, and from there a short ski path leads to the destination at the Hochkar hut.

Author's tip

The Schwarzalm is the highest alpine hut on the Eisenstraße in Lower Austria. The Leckermoor is a very valuable, protected raised bog!
