Freeriding on the Hochkar

Venturing Off-Piste

When there is fresh, deep snow, the Hochkar offers opportunities for off-piste skiing. However, freeriding is always dependent on snow conditions, the weather, visibility and the avalanche risk.

Anyone venturing into open terrain does so at their own risk. Please check the current conditions before every run, be mindful of other winter sports enthusiasts, and only ski where it is safe and permitted.

Important to know

  • Freeriding is only advisable and possible when there is sufficient snow cover.
  • You ski at your own risk.
  • Avalanche reports, weather and visibility must be checked in advance.
  • Safety equipment such as an avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel and helmet is strongly recommended.
  • If in doubt, do not set off.

Respect for forests and nature

Off-piste, particular care must be taken to respect nature, wildlife and woodland areas. Freeriding in open terrain does not mean that you are allowed to ski anywhere.

Under Section 33 of the Austrian Forestry Act, areas undergoing reforestation or afforestation may not be used until the vegetation has reached a height of at least 3 metres. Furthermore, skiing in the forest in the vicinity of ski lifts is only permitted on marked slopes or ski trails.

Please therefore avoid woodland areas, young growth, reforested areas and restricted zones.

Safety first

Freeriding takes place in alpine terrain. Conditions can change rapidly – even right next to the ski resort. It is essential to assess the terrain, snow conditions and avalanche risk accurately.

Please note:

  • Check the latest avalanche report
  • never venture into off-piste terrain alone
  • Carry safety equipment and know how to use it
  • respect closed-off areas
  • Keep your distance and be aware of the load on the slope
  • Refrain from freeriding in poor visibility, during storms or in unsafe conditions
